The Pensions Ombudsman is also appointed as the Pension Protection Fund Ombudsman or "PPFO". PPFO work is handled from the same office the Pensions Ombudsman's work.
The Pension Protection Fund Ombudsman can deal with disputes and appeals in relation to:
- the Pension Protection Fund (PPF) (whose main function is to provide compensation to members of eligible defined benefit pension schemes, when there is a "qualifying insolvency event" in relation to the employer, and where there are insufficient assets in the pension scheme to cover the Pension Protection Fund level of compensation)
and
- the Financial Assistance Scheme (which offers help to some people who have lost out on their pension if they were a member of an under-funded defined benefit scheme that started to wind-up in specific financial circumstances between 1 January 1997 and 5 April 2005).
